Hats are huge! Bill Cunningham of the NYTimes is quoted as saying “there’s no question that fedora hats, being worn by men and women, is THE trend of the summer.”
They’re all over Manhattan and certainly coming to a street vendor near you. I’m loving this trend, it’s so….well…democratic. Young and old, man and woman, artist and worker, everyone looks hip in a fedora.
For those of us of the feminine persuasion, it raises the question: what kind of jewelry do you pair with a hat that has traditionally been worn by men?
My answer? Classic pearl studs. They pull a little more femininity into the look without distracting from the tomboy chic. It’s all about balance.
One great deal is this set of three pearl studs in white, pink and black to suit any mood or outfit. So slip on some pearls, strap up some sandals, flop that fedora on your head, and step out looking ultra hip with one of the most versatile trends we’ve seen all year.
Spring has sprung and the Summer Solstice is on its way.
That means summer dresses. Long, high waisted, wonderfully casual, flirty, girly dresses are IN, in a big, big way this year. I love these dresses, very few items in your wardrobe will be able to pull off the combination of comfortable and sexy the way these things do.
These dresses also provide a great opportunity to show of some fun and funky jewelry.
Exhibit A: My little Brooklyn butterfly here. A perfectly lovely woman wearing a great dress – but, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, doesn’t this number just cry out for a killer pair of dangly earrings?
What kind? You ask. Any kind. The fabulous thing about this kind of outfit is you can get away with almost anything when it comes to earrings. Colors! Patters! Sizes! Shapes! Go wild.
Can you be allergic to jewelry? The short answer, sadly, is yes. However, women who find themselves sensitive to certain items can still go shopping for their favorite pieces.
If you experience discomfort or redness when wearing jewelry, you are likely allergic to one of the metals present. Nickel, zinc and copper are often mixed with silver and gold to help harden the more malleable metals. It’s probable that one of these components is making you uncomfortable.
Women who find themselves in this situation can start off by shopping for stainless steel pieces. This metal contains a small amount of nickel, but it is so tightly bound that it will not reach your skin.
Choosing items made from pure gold or silver is another option, as women are unlikely to be allergic to the elements.
Finally, jewelry that is plated in rhodium is another solution. The plating is used mostly on white gold and gives it a shiny, finished look. It also serves as a barrier between your skin and the metal. However, this is only a temporary solution, as it eventually wears off and will need to be replated.
Keeping skin dry and clean may also prove helpful. While it may be difficult to stop sweating, keep in mind that perspiration can be a catalyst for allergic reactions, as salt reacts with metals.
Be sure that no soap residue is left on your body after bathing. Soap breaks down the barrier between your skin and the jewelry, which will lead to further irritation.
Those who are allergic to jewelry shouldn’t give up on wearing their favorite items. Beauty is pain, but it doesn’t have to be itchy!
Most of us ladies know it’s important to store our precious jewels carefully.
There has been some buzz going around about how to turn a simple ice cube tray into a jewelry box. We love this idea – but we think you can even take it a step further.
For starters, why not turn an egg crate into a place to store your necklaces? You can use a smaller one to keep your precious silver and gold pieces in order. Consider painting it – it will give you a chance to reminisce about your high school art class days!
If you need a ring holder, try wrapping some pink ribbon around a pen or pencil. Then, stick it in a piece of clay (or heck, Play-Doh) and, voila! You’ve got a place to store your adorable finger adornments.
For earring holders, we suggest something crazy. Use an old window screen, cut out a square shape and place it in a picture frame. And there you have it – something old turned into something new!
Remember, it’s important to keep your stones safe and organized. Cleanliness is next to trendiness!
If you’re stumped for a gift to give Mom this Mother’s Day, why not turn to jewelry? Every girl loves a new piece to add to their collection, so take it a step further and give mom a piece that honors her children.
One of the best ways to bring out your mom’s parental pride is with jewelry that has your birthstone in it. She’ll adore anything you give her, but sporting your birthstone on a necklace, ring, or bracelet is an extremely sentimental gesture.
Also, don’t forget the power of a locket. These pendants are gorgeous and will always spark people’s curiosity. Consider placing a photo of you and your mother in it, or have it engraved with a special message.
Charm bracelets make fantastic Mother’s Day gifts, as your mom can wear one that reminds her of you! If you play a sport or have a particular hobby, add a corresponding charm to the bracelet.
Mother’s Day is special. Make it extra meaningful by following these simple ideas.
I recently met up with Karen, 31, and her newborn, Alexander, to talk about how fashion changes once you have a baby.
What are your fashion inspirations?
I tend to go for softer colors, and kinda girly-things. If I had to credit an inspiration, I’d say my big sis.
What trends are you loving right now?
(laughs) I haven’t really been able to keep up, to tell you the truth. I hear prints are going to be big, so that’s fun. Really though? I’m just looking forward to fitting into my skinny jeans again…Hopefully.
What changes with regard to fashion when you have a baby?
Wow. Everything? For myself, I think much more practically. In anticipation of spit-up, I know always carry a cardigan to cover up with when I’m out. I think your fashion sense gets noticeably dumbed down and simplified – out of necessity.
What about jewelry? What changes there?
Well, since my clothes have gotten a little more dull, I’m now more conscious of trying to add in a nice piece of jewelry to add a little more personality to an outfit. But no more dangle earrings, let me tell you. That’s a prime baby-pulling hazard.
What’s your best fashion advice for other new moms out there?
Don’t sweat it. Be comfortable. This stage will pass.
So if you could get any piece of jewelry for mothers day, what would it be?
Diamond earrings. Studs. For sure, a beautiful pair of diamond studs. I think I’ve earned em.
Mariah Carey isn’t the only girl who adores butterflies. We think these incredible insects make for astounding additions to one’s jewelry collection.
Necklaces, bracelets and earrings adorned with butterfly shapes are perfect accessories for the spring.
To begin, try purchasing a necklace that has a butterfly pendant on it. The beautiful bugs are synonymous with femininity and beauty. Feel free to choose one that’s covered in diamonds – the extra sparkle will make you smile.
A butterfly charm bracelet is another must-have. They’ll remind everyone that the warm weather is here.
Finally, butterfly earrings are beyond cute. Butterfly-shaped posts or dangling earrings are dainty, darling and just divine.
When it comes to spring style, spread your (butterfly) wings and fly.
Corals look pretty in the sea, but we think they look best on our bodies!
Jewelry created from this stone is not only gorgeous, it’s perfect for this time of year. If you’re headed to the beach or just spending time in the sun, a coral item is a perfect accessory.
This casual stone is perfect for ladies who don’t like flashy jewelry. If you’re a coral novice, try wearing a necklace or bracelet with a small coral stone on it.
If you want all eyes on you, choose a bolder coral piece. A beaded necklace or bracelet will certainly command attention. If you’re feeling daring, mix in some turquoise and watch everyone’s head turn in your direction.
As always, try to match your jewelry with your personality. Don’t forget – pearls aren’t the only sexy gems from the sea!
While many women prefer to wear dangly earrings in order to feel sexy and desirable, they shouldn’t discount the power of stud earrings. The jewelry pieces are often thought of as simple choices for the day, but nighttime may be the right time to wear them, too.
Stud earrings can work wonders for woman’s confidence. They add a bit of flair to an outfit and, when paired with the right clothes, allow girls of every shape and size to feel like they’re channeling Marilyn Monroe.
We recommend women make sure they own a standard pair of stud earrings. Ladies, this is as much of a fashion must-have as the Little Black Dress. Diamond stud earrings will match everything, but don’t be afraid to purchase more colorful gemstones, such as rubies or emeralds.
If you’re wearing a strapless dress or tube top, consider stud earrings to complement the outfit. The sparkle on your ears will attract everyone’s attention and force them to glance at your bare shoulders and neck. Sexy!
Ladies, remember that when it comes to jewelry, you don’t have to overdo it to stand out. Stud earrings are simple, gorgeous, and appropriate for every occasion.
