Fashion Advice From: Baristas

Yes, even coffee has style
Yes, even coffee has style
Baristas. They see us bleary eyed in the morning, or bleary eyed staring into our identical macbooks all afternoon. But rest assured, they see much more than that.

I recently had a chat about fashion with Sal, 31, Barista at Jumpin Java cafe in San Francisco.

Here’s what he had to say:

You see a lot of people come through here, what styles are you loving right now?
Truthfully, style is all in the attitude. I can see two people come in wearing essentially the same things, but one person just owns it. That’s the secret, you just gotta own it. Other than that, bright colors are popping back out as we get closer to spring, and I love that.

Do you get to show off your own style at work, and what would you call it?
I call it the IceBreaker. I tend to refashion a lot of clothes I find in my own way, and that can be a great conversation starter, even early in the morning, before people have had their coffee.

Who have been your fashion Inspirations?
Mostly? Vivanne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. Vivianne saw that great punk-rock aesthetic of the 1970’s and took it to the mainstream in a way that was fun and irreverent, but still demanded to be taken seriously. And McQueen was just so inventive. He’d take these traditional patterns and just blow them out and animate them in a way that was so freeing. I’ve learned a lot of the two of them.

What do you think is the best way to incorporate a great piece of jewelry into a fabulous outfit?
Oh honey, when you have a great piece of jewelry, you build your outfit around THAT, not the other way around. Seriously, in my world, jewelry always comes first.

Ok, what kinds of jewelry do you see that are really hot right now?
In a word? Pearls. When I was growing up, pearls were for nice girls and grandmothers, but I’ve really seem them get a total makeover the past while. Particularly colored pearls. These gorgeous young women are coming in with green pearls, pink pearls, purple pearls and totally turning heads. All of a sudden pearls are fun and fresh and funky like they never were before. Who knew?

Earrings for guys: Do or don’t?

Jack Sparrow sports plenty of jewelry. Many men are on the fence when it comes to earrings. They can look cool and hip, but one step in the wrong direction and you’re Captain Jack Sparrow. Or worse, Kevin Federline.

When it comes to man jewelry, less is more in our humble opinion. Some guys like to rock a post in both ears, but we think that the traditional one-earring look is the way to go (Unless you feel like dropping a whole lot of cash on giant diamond posts, in which case, more power to you!).

According to Bnet.com, 60 Minutes co-anchor Ed Bradley had his left ear pierced in 1986 after Liza Minelli presented him with a diamond post, and her has been sporting a diamond stud ever since.

Men who work in a very formal work environment might want to chose a traditional diamond earring or a small stud, while those who have a more lax office space can experiment a little more.

New York Fashion Week showcases bold jewelry items

Attention-grabbing necklaces have been popular at New York Fashion Week. If what’s happening on the runway at New York’s Fashion Week is any indication of what fashionistas can expect for Fall 2010, (and it always is), it’s time to start stocking up on bold, chunky necklaces and edgy pieces.

"Each season, accessories seem to become more and more important because it’s less expensive to buy accessories than to buy new clothes," Ruth Finley, publisher of The Fashion Calendar, told Reuters.

So what should you look for to remain fashion-forward without dropping a ton of cash? Simple statement pieces like large or chunky chain necklaces in silver might be especially popular, as will thick bracelets.

Designers also suggested to the news source that tough and strong looks with a futuristic or street-wise vibes will be all the rage.

This is great news for girls who love jewelry, as it means you can streamline your wardrobe and add variety and interest by throwing on a few killer accessories. And what could be simpler than that?

Start stocking up now so that you’ll beat the rush and get your pick of fancy baubles and innovative designs.

Leaf-shaped jewelry: a fresh look for any season

Leaf-shaped gold jewelry is the perfect addition to your winter ensemble. Leaf-shaped jewelry has been a popular trend in recent months, and for good reason. There are a variety of gorgeous leaf-shaped accessories out there, and they’ll go with your style whether you’re a casual hippie chick or a fierce fashionista.

The unexpected and organic shape is a great way to mix things up if you usually sport traditional hoop earrings or diamond studs, but earring-fanatics are sure to like this cute style as well.

Leaf-shaped earrings look especially great on long-haired ladies, because the metal will flash a bit under your hair, though short-haired girls can choose these to be their statement pieces.

Our favorite kind of leaf jewelry is the uber-realistic gold variety that’s cast from real leaves. They boast tiny, delicate veins and thin, fragile edges. Others cool options have a more solid shape and come in silver, platinum or bronze.

In addition to leaf earrings, look for leaf-shaped embellishments on everything from pendant necklaces and bracelets to belt buckles.

They’re pretty all-year round, but these pieces are the perfect way to add a touch of summer to your wardrobe if you feel stuck in a winter slump.

Three great jewelry trends of 2009

Pearl necklaces were a big trend in 2009. Since the new year is upon us, now is the perfect time to revisit some of the most popular jewelry trends of 2009. Here are three of our favorites that don’t show any signs of stopping. We’re hopeful that they’ll keep on truckin’ right through 2010.

Chain necklaces. These were incredibly popular this year – and we don’t mean the industrial links that resemble a dog collar. The ones that we favored were delicate and airy, adding a little glamour to every outfit. We like this trend for its versatility. A long chain necklace looks just as appropriate with a t-shirt as it does when you’re dressed for a night on the town. We especially love hammered metals.

Giant baubles. From oversized cocktail rings to gi-normous necklaces, sparkly, flashy pieces were all the rage in 2009. Maybe Americans were indulging their penchant for ostentatious displays of wealth despite (or because of) a shaky economy. Whatever the reason, we’re glad that big jewelry made a comeback. We say, wear your huge pearls and flashy cuff bracelets with pride!

Layered necklaces. We. Love. Layered. Necklaces. Silver or gold, beaded or chained, these necklaces look great on everyone, everywhere all the time.

Think we missed one? Tell us about a jewelry trend that you think should have made our shortlist in the comments below.ADNFCR-2807-ID-19533092-ADNFCR

Maximize accessories to streamline your wardrobe

Bold bangle bracelets will change the look of your entire ensemble. For many of us, our chock-full closets are packed with clothing items that we seldom wear, but our daily rotation mostly consists of a few tried-and-true favorites.

Because it can be frustrating to cull through drawers of old sweatshirts and racks of jeans that you don’t wear, you might consider cultivating a more stream-lined wardrobe and using accessories like bright necklaces, bold earrings and bangle bracelets to vary your look.

For example, if you own 30 shirts but only really wear 10 of them get rid of the extra clutter and experiment with the tops that you like. Pairing a pearl necklace with a simple black button down creates a completely different look than if the shirt was paired with a colorful beaded necklace.

This approach also leaves you free to invest in accessories that you love, guilt free. A shirt could last a year but a well-made piece of jewelry can last a lifetime.

So what should you do with all of that extra storage space? Use your closet to display purses, necklaces, scarves and bracelets so that you can see all of your options as you get ready in the morning.

Sex and the City 2 boasts some serious bling

What does your jewelry say about your personality? When it comes to fashion, the ladies of Sex and the City haven’t disappointed us yet. And from the trailers circulating online, it looks like our favorite foursome will return to the big screen looking better than ever.

We love how the franchise has consistently used jewelry to express the characters’ personalities. Bear with us here: Prim and proper Charlotte is almost never without her pearls. Miranda, a successful attorney, is always sporting edgy earrings with her power suits. Carrie, whose search for self (and a significant other) is central to the show, usually wears her gold "Carrie" necklace, and Samantha, who perhaps of all the ladies most perfectly embodies the city, is usually parading around in architectural accessories like swanky deco bracelets and sculptural cuffs.

In the latest film, the girls look the same as always – only better. The sequel takes Carrie and company to Morocco for a lavish vacation), which of course gives them an excuse to pull out all of the fashion-stops. From turbans to chunky necklaces, Carrie just won’t quit.

Fans of the series can take inspiration from the characters and seek out signature pieces that fit with who their personality, which may garner some to say "That’s such a Samantha thing to wear."ADNFCR-2807-ID-19529440-ADNFCR

Combine silver and gold for an edgy look

Silver and gold can be worn together if you like the look. Bear with us here: silver and gold might be the new black and brown. A formerly abhorrent combination that just suddenly looks so right. Kind of like Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil.

If you have divided your jewelry box into silver and gold days, now is the perfect time to integrate some of your favorite accessories. Trust us, it will be liberating. Matching all of your jewelry suddenly seems really stuffy and old school, and not in a good way.

We especially like rose gold combined with platinum or silver: it looks funky, warm and like you’re not trying too hard.

For mixing novices, search for a single accessory that combines silver and gold. The one purchase should work with almost all of your other pieces and will hopefully allow you to branch out a little.

For maximum impact, make sure that your mixing looks deliberate. For example, pair a small gold locket with another silver necklace, or wear two bangles in different metals.
