5 iPhone Apps to Make You More Fashionable

For those of you who are iPhone users you already know there are plenty of useless apps out there.  Lots of us at Ice are iPhone users and we’re often on the lookout for the best fashion focused apps to inspire us. We’ve compiled a list of some apps we find help us get into the right fashion forward mood.

1. Style.com – For the more serious fashionista, this app gives you a front row seat at all the latest runway shows and Fashion Week events around the world. It features tons of high-quality photos and videos of what’s hot this season. And it’s free!

2. Redlaser – If you’re looking to save a few extra bucks while shopping – and who isn’t? – download this app for free. Next time you’re out shopping and find something you wish wasn’t so expensive – scan the barcode with your phone and a list will pop up of where you can find that product for less. Brilliant? We think so.

3. Stylebook – I can sometimes be obsessively organized with certain things so I love the idea of this app. It’s basically a closet manager.  Photograph every item in your closet -which is annoying but just do it. Now you have your whole wardrobe with you at all times which comes in handy when shopping. No more buying 3 navy cardigans (unless you want to). It allows you to organize your clothes, shoes & accessories in categories and put outfits together similar to Polyvore. It’s really helpful when packing for an upcoming vacation. This one isn’t free though, costs $3.99.

4. Chicfeed – This app allows you to scroll through photos from the top fashion blogs. Seeing is believing. People want to look at pictures to inspire their own fashion sense and this is exactly what Chicfeed does.

5. Fashism – The scenario is: you’re shopping alone trying on items in the changing room and need a second opinion. You don’t trust the salesperson’s opinion since they’re just trying to make a sale. Who are you going to ask? How about taking a pic of yourself in the mirror of the changing room and posting it online and getting thousands of people voting on whether you should buy it. Get responses in seconds to ease your mind that you do or don’t look fab in that leopard dress. Fashism is free.

Straight off the runway: Pearly dangle earrings

Hot for Fall: Pearly dangle earrings
Hot for Fall: Pearly dangle earrings

One pet peeve of runway shows? They always forget the jewelry! I know, I know, it’s all about the clothes but in the real world we know that no outfit is complete without its proper accessories. So you can imagine how excited I got when I saw pics from Oscar de la Renta’s recent show.

Earrings! On the Runway? Yes. Yes. And yes please!

The daring dangles are gorgeous and, according to Mr. de la Renta, hot for fall. Like on the runway this perfect pair would look great paired with an evening gown, but I’ve also found some with a more versatile feel. Specifically, these black pearl drop earrings. Want to lighten in up a little bit? Not to worry, they come in a more traditional white pearl version as well. I’m having trouble deciding between them.

Thanks Oscar!

Fashion Advice From: Baristas

Yes, even coffee has style
Yes, even coffee has style
Baristas. They see us bleary eyed in the morning, or bleary eyed staring into our identical macbooks all afternoon. But rest assured, they see much more than that.

I recently had a chat about fashion with Sal, 31, Barista at Jumpin Java cafe in San Francisco.

Here’s what he had to say:

You see a lot of people come through here, what styles are you loving right now?
Truthfully, style is all in the attitude. I can see two people come in wearing essentially the same things, but one person just owns it. That’s the secret, you just gotta own it. Other than that, bright colors are popping back out as we get closer to spring, and I love that.

Do you get to show off your own style at work, and what would you call it?
I call it the IceBreaker. I tend to refashion a lot of clothes I find in my own way, and that can be a great conversation starter, even early in the morning, before people have had their coffee.

Who have been your fashion Inspirations?
Mostly? Vivanne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. Vivianne saw that great punk-rock aesthetic of the 1970’s and took it to the mainstream in a way that was fun and irreverent, but still demanded to be taken seriously. And McQueen was just so inventive. He’d take these traditional patterns and just blow them out and animate them in a way that was so freeing. I’ve learned a lot of the two of them.

What do you think is the best way to incorporate a great piece of jewelry into a fabulous outfit?
Oh honey, when you have a great piece of jewelry, you build your outfit around THAT, not the other way around. Seriously, in my world, jewelry always comes first.

Ok, what kinds of jewelry do you see that are really hot right now?
In a word? Pearls. When I was growing up, pearls were for nice girls and grandmothers, but I’ve really seem them get a total makeover the past while. Particularly colored pearls. These gorgeous young women are coming in with green pearls, pink pearls, purple pearls and totally turning heads. All of a sudden pearls are fun and fresh and funky like they never were before. Who knew?
