All three of our blogs were highlighted as examples of corporate blogs with bling in a recent article by Ecommerce-guide.com.
For e-tailer Ice.com, having a blog (in this case, two blogs) just made good marketing sense. In 2006, the company’s owners were dissatisfied with the advertising options available to them and saw a blog as having the potential to be a better return on investment.
Before launching its official Ice Blog, however, Vice President of Marketing Pinny Gniwisch became actively involved on a number of third-party blogs having to do with jewelry and fashion, so people would recognize him as an authority on those subjects when Ice.com launched its own blog.
“When you’re talking about, say, jewelry, [though he says the subject could be anything] you need to go out and search the popular jewelry blogs and you need to comment on those blogs,” he said. “If you don’t get involved, people won’t recognize you and your blog won’t get picked up. I got involved in the community, and people started to recognize me as someone who cared about the world of jewelry and fashion. Then, when we put up our blog, they took our links and trackbacks, all the things search engines love, and that helped fuel our growth.”
Another thing that fueled the popularity of Ice.com’s official blog was Gniwisch’s “aha” moment of linking it to the jewelry celebrities were wearing to awards shows and big events.

Success Magazine shines the spotlight on Ice.com this month, highlighting many of the lessons we’ve learned along the way.
From the outside, it looked like the Montreal-based company had achieved the impossible. Ice.com’s foundersâ€â€Gniwisch, his two brothers, and a brother-in-lawâ€â€had rescued the business when investors wanted to shut down operations after the dot-com bust. The foursome scraped together $600,000, bought back the company from investors, and drew up version 2.0 of the business model. By 2001, Ice.com had broken even by selling $3.5 million worth of baubles.
But on the inside, chaos was spreading. Take customer service. Orders for rings and necklaces flew in each hour, but the company couldn’t keep up with the demand and needed three working days to process an order. Worse, Ice.com’s temporary warehouse employees were stealing from the company: Some $60,000 of merchandise went missing in 2001.
Despite Gniwisch’s best efforts, the founders’ elbow-grease philosophyâ€â€everyone had to pitch in to make the company surviveâ€â€wasn’t working anymore now that the business was bigger. And Ice.com’s growing pains extended far beyond the packing center. The finances needed help, the executive team had no process for making decisions, and employees were receiving mixed signals. “When you’re an entrepreneur, you do things by the seat of your pants,†says Gniwisch. “You sit in a room, have a great idea, do high fives, and walk out all excited. But there’s a whole other group of people who get left in the dark because the communication isn’t there.â€Â
